This book describes a long distance cycle ride or walk between Portland Bill and Portsmouth and Havant, broken down into easy manageable chunks of about 5 miles each way. You can walk or ride all or part of it, or perhaps just sit in your favourite armchair and read about it!

The route takes you along the Rodwell Trail between Portland and Weymouth, through Poole, Bournemouth and Lymington to the New Forest, then carries on through Southampton and alongside Southampton Water on to Gosport, Portsmouth and the Hayling Billy Trail to Havant.   An alternative inland route between Poole and Brockenhurst is also described, going via Wimborne and Ringwood, mainly using the Castleman's Trailway

There is a also a section looking at cycling and walking routes along former railway lines on the Isle of Wight, including Freshwater to Yarmouth, Newport to Cowes, Bembridge to Brading and Sandown to Newport and on to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway at Wootton.

If you've never been to the Isle of Wight before, or you don't know about its railways, the front cover gives you a flavour of the uniqueness of train travel over there!

The route covered by this book is mainly off-road,using dedicated cycle tracks, but there are also a number of on-road sections, especially between Portland Bill and Fortuneswell, Weymouth and Poole, Southbourne (east of Bournemouth) to Lymington, greater Southampton and Lee on Solent to Hayling Island. There are also a number of on-road sections on the Isle of Wight.

Most of these on-road sections however, by way of compensation, offer some excellent coastal views in the areas through which they pass.

If you take the coastal route between Poole and Lymington you see some impressive views over the Solent towards the Isle of Wight.

There are also coastal sections between Fortuneswell and Weymouth, Southampton and Hayling Island, and also along some of the north and east coastlines of the Isle of Wight.

The photograph on the rear cover (opposite) shows the view of Chesil Beach from the Isle of Portland, just before the road descends into Fortuneswell.
